Ulua Fishing Gear
For three generations, the Tokunaga family has been
fishing for and catching ulua. And that's why the S. Tokunaga Store
is particularly well set up for all the gear you'll need to make that
happen for yourself as well. Custom
rods and great reels, night lights, tabis,
hooks, gear bags, and fluorocarbon
line are just part of what they offer. Below are some additional
"must have" items for your fishing trip.

It's never a good thing to lose a fish when you've
made so much effort to get to the fishing spot, find bait and cast
into the perfect spot. But losing your whole rig because you
didn't take the precaution of having a tag line to your reel is
seriously bad juju. This stainless steel spring clip fits into
the eyes on either side of the reel. It's easily attached for
fishing and released when the big one hits. It measures ~
6" from spring to clip tip and ~ 4 1/2" from "elbow
to elbow" in the open position.

This stainless steel alarm bell measures 3"
wide at the base and 3 1/2" from base to spring
attachment. The midrange tone is loud and clear, and easily
heard above pounding surf.

Big brother to the stainless steel alarm bell shown
above, this bell measures ~4" wide at the base and ~4"
from the base to the spring attachment. With a deeper and more
resonant voice and loud enough to wake the dead, this bell will
surely announce the arrival of one "heavy-set" ulua.

At nearly 15" long and with a 5/8" diameter rod
frame, this galvanized steel rod holder will provide a solid base for your
favorite rod and reel when pounded into the right lava crack with a small
sledge hammer.

Tired of scratches on your surf rods and reels out on the lava?
This stainless steel rod organizer should do the trick. At nearly
14" long, when pounded into a convenient crack in the rocks, this
handy gadget will hold three rods with ease.

At nearly 36" long, this all aluminum sand spike is a handy, all
purpose rod holder. Although often used in soft sediments, it's just
as handy if the right sized crack is available in seaside cliff lava
flows. The lower cylinder has a pole butt stop to keep the reel
clear from the upper one. This type of rod holder is suitable for
spinning rod and reel combinations up to line capacities of 50# test.

The original "Hilo Guides" were introduced to
Hawai'i in the 1940's by Sumie Tokunaga, founder of S. Tokunaga
Store. These flexible, durable stainless guides were designed to
replace the old "boat style" guides. Grandson Michael
Tokunaga, avid fisherman, custom rod builder and present owner of S.
Tokunaga Store still sells these guides. "Hilo Guides"
have a more weather-resistant surface and a higher frame for greater line
clearance. Copied by many but still the best!

Stainless Steel Barrel Gaff -
This is a specially designed sliding gaff for those ulua fishermen
interested in catch and release. As shown above, there is a
3/16" slot running parallel to the length of the barrel. Within
the barrel there is a wire clip that extends from the top to the bottom of
the slot. Once the line has been inserted into the slot and behind
the clip, the line can't come out of the barrel again unless the user
moves the clip by hand. Also within the barrel and attached to the
cross rod is a half-moon shaped piece of stainless sheet metal. When
the hauling line is attached to the swivel and the barrel is vertical,
this half-moon shaped metal becomes horizontal with enough space between
it and the inside of the barrel to allow the gaff to move easily up and
down the line. When the gaff reaches a swivel, tension is released
on the line and the half-moon shaped piece becomes temporarily vertical,
allowing the gaff to move past the swivel and down the leader. This
is a very useful and clever piece of work.
